OpenAI is planning to purchase Google Tensor Processing Unit AI chips, according to reporting published this week.

OpenAI first began renting Google TPU chips in June 2025. The company has also posted an open job listing for an engineer to optimize its AI models for the TPU architecture.

OpenAI declined to comment on the reported purchase plan. Neither OpenAI nor Google have confirmed the plan. Price, volume and timing for any purchase remain undisclosed.
